Vice President Pence to Visit NASA's Johnson Space Center for Astronaut Class Announcement

"The new astronaut candidates could one day be performing research on the International Space Station, launching from American soil aboard spacecraft built by American companies, and traveling to the moon or even Mars with the help of NASA's new Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket."

Keith's note: Well Duh, isn't that why NASA picks astronauts? Odd that NASA needs to remind the media what astronauts do. Oh yes NASA just sort of formally announced that it wants to send astronauts back to the Moon - and also to Mars - with a shrinking budget (shh!).

Mike Pence Abruptly Cancels PBS Interview After Comey Testimony Is Released , The Wrap

"Just moments after Comey's prepared opening remarks to the Senate Intelligence Committee were posted to the United States Senate website, Vice President Mike Pence abruptly canceled a planned interview with PBS Newshour. ... No explanation for the cancelation was given, despite the fact that the interview had already been promoted on the air on Tuesday. The announcement came as a surprise to PBS correspondent Miles O'Brien, who was already at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, to interview the vice president."

OMG they are doing this astronaut announcement like one of Trump's Beauty Pageants.

Which Astronaut Recently Got Fired From NASA for $1,600 in Fake Taxi Receipts? , Gizmodo

(sigh) Gizmodo can't make up their mind. "Fired", "Termination", "Resigned"? Pick one. Oh wait - the OIG says that the astronaut "resigned". While the end result is more or less the same (the astronaut no longer works at NASA) resigning is not the same as being "fired" or "terminated". People get caught at NASA doing lots of things and they often keep their jobs.

As to who the astronaut is, well ... check out this press release which refers to an astronaut who retired in December 2016: "Astronaut Cady Coleman Leaves NASA ". My sources tell me that Cady Coleman is indeed the astronaut mentioned by the OIG. This was not exactly a secret at NASA HQ over the past few months. I was not going to say anything - until I read the FOIA response that Gizmodo got. I'm sort of at a loss for words. Think of the millions of people who'd love to be a NASA astronaut - and then this is how one of them throws away that job.

Oh yes: I can guarantee you that the time that the OIG spent on this investigation in terms of their own staff's salaries was a lot more than $1,600. Just sayin'

Keith's note: Last night there was a panel at the Humans To Mars Summit about risk and exploration. The panel was moderated by Leonard David and consisted of NAI Director Penny Boston, former astronaut and SMD AA John Grunsfeld, former Google space lead Tiffany Montague, and NASA SMD's Rick Davis. At one point the 2004 Risk and Exploration Symposium that John and I put together back in 2004 was mentioned. The proceedings are online for free download . I am currently writing two books - one on Astrobiology expeditions and the other as a follow-up to the 2004 Risk and Exploration Symposium (and another we did in 2007 at LSU).

The revolutionary progress of the Republic of Ireland has reached crisis point. Welfare provision in Northern Ireland is worryingly inadequate and now David Cameron’s Government has proposed cuts to supports for the disabled. More significantly, the UK referendum on EU membership could undo years of north-south integration.

The time has come for action — after due consultation with First Minister, Arlene Foster, and Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness — to safeguard the security, health, and happiness not just of those in the care of the Westminster government but of the island as a whole. An almost perfectly inconclusive outcome to the recent election to Dáil Éireann speaks volumes.

An abbreviation, simply put, is a shortened form of a word. In writing, abbreviations are useful when you need to squeeze a lot of writing into a small space. You can also use them in place of long or cumbersome phrases to make your sentences easier to read.

One thing to remember about abbreviations is that certain ones are considered informal. If you are writing something very formal, it’s better to err on the side of spelling things out. The other thing to remember is that some readers may not know what an abbreviation means. If the abbreviation is obscure or unfamiliar, make sure to explain what it means the first time you use it.

    Acronyms and Initialisms

Abbreviations come in a few different varieties. Both acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations that are formed by combining the first letter of each word in a longer name or phrase. Typically, acronyms and initialisms are written in all capital letters to distinguish them from ordinary words.

An acronym is pronounced as a single word, rather than as a series of letters. NASA , for instance, is an acronym. It stands for N ational A eronautics and S pace A dministration. Occasionally, an acronym becomes so commonplace that it evolves into an ordinary word that people no longer think of as an acronym. The words scuba and laser , for instance, originated as acronyms ( s elf c ontained u nderwater b reathing a pparatus and l ight a mplification by s timulated e mission of r adiation, respectively).

Initialisms are similar to acronyms in that they are also formed using the first letter of each word in a longer phrase. Unlike acronyms, however, initialisms are pronounced as a series of letters. NFL (National Football League), for example, is pronounced en-eff-ell .

If you need to use an indefinite article before an acronym or initialism, use the initial sound of the word (not necessarily the initial letter) guide your choice.

Internet slang often takes the form of initialisms: LOL, IDK, IMO, BRB. Although this type of slang isn’t appropriate for important correspondence like emails to your professor or colleagues, or in online comments when you want to be taken seriously, it can be handy for informal online chatting, especially if you type slowly.

Titles such as mister, miss, and doctor , as well as the names of academic degrees such as bachelor of arts and doctor of philosophy are almost always abbreviated. In American English, title abbreviations are followed by a period; in British English, the period is omitted.

The most common title abbreviations include:

Mr. = Mister Mrs. = Mistress (pronounced “missus”) Ms. = (pronounced “miss” or “miz”) Sr. = Senior Jr. = Junior Dr. = Doctor

Mr. Green asked Ms. Grey if she had met Dr. Jekyl. (American style)

    Punk/Post-Punk

It all began as a solo project by Ian Jacobs.

He’s played in several other bands for almost his entire adult life and he was ready to find an outlet for his own self-expression. He loves to toy around with drum machines, loop machines, reverb, recording equipment, etc. So he created Monograms.

After a few shows on stage alone, his friend approached him asking if he could play drums with him. Though apprehensive at first, Jacobs eventually agree and he never looked back! He confesses to BTRtoday that it instantly became more fun.

Currently, Monograms has morphed into a booming four-piece fronted byJacobs playing guitar and Vox, accompanied by Michael Nesci also on guitar, Christopher Day on bass, and Tim McCoy on drums. Their Facebook explains their sound as “jagged and hefty psych-pop songs made for driving and swirling”—and they categorize their genre as “grit pop, nuke wave, and should gaze.”

If that doesn’t already give you a pretty clear picture of their vibe and sound, try taking a classic punk song from the early ‘80’s and combine it with some super obscure DJ from today and you’ll get something like Monograms. It’s a mixture of synth pop and punk rock, who could ask for more?

Recently, they released a new EP entitled “Silencer.” It took a while to make, with many of the songs being recorded in different places and headspaces, admits Jacobs. “I would come up with a riff or an idea, sometimes with the other dudes, sometimes not, and then I would take it home, do all the arranging and the bass lines and program some drum machine beats to follow the feel, and then I would bring that to the next rehearsal,” he explains about the creative process.

He explains that he called it “Silencer,” due to his nihilistic view on language being actually quite empty. “I’m always obsessed with the idea that words are really meaningless a lot of the time that I think words are overrated—you can try and explain to someone how you feel a million times over, but you’ll never really know,” he adds. “If the album had a subtitle that would be it!”

Currently, Monograms is working on a ton more new material, so they expect to have another EP ready to go by this fall. Jacobs confesses that this time they took a more collaborative route. “It feels cool to turn that corner, but it also feels cool to get this last leg of these other songs that are more like my solo project out,” he says.
